American Association of State Colleges and Universities is a Washington-based higher education association of nearly 420 public colleges, universities and systems whose members share a learning- and teaching-centered culture, a historic commitment to underserved student populations and a dedication to research and creativity that advances their regions’ economic progress and cultural development.
The Carnegie Foundation classification for Community Engagement is an elective classification, meaning it is based on voluntary participation by institutions. Community Engagement describes the collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. Since 2006, the Carnegie Foundation has recognized 195 institutions as having fulfilled the requirements for the Community Engagement classification.

The National Service-Learning Clearinghouse maintains a website with timely information and relevant resources to support service-learning programs, practitioners, and researchers. The Clearinghouse operates national email discussion lists for K-12, cbo, tribes and territories, and higher education service-learning to encourage discussion and exchange of ideas. The Clearinghouse also maintains an ever-growing library collection that is available to Learn and Serve American grantees and subgrantees.
