We participated in a Thurs-Sun community clinic where nearly 70 employees volunteered their time. If the employee volunteered on a day that was a normal work day, they took paid time off leave; otherwise there was no compensation for volunteering. How are others reporting volunteer time for hospital-sponsored events? In addition to volunteer hours, are there formulas being used to capture any monetary value of that staff person’s time?________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

If they took PTO then it is there volunteer hours not your organizations…if they would have stayed on the clock THEN you could have counted the hours…

If there is no cost to the organization, then it doesn’t get valued into our Community Benefit.

I track volunteer hours just so that I have a record. There is no $ value assigned. I thought that is what the volunteer box was for.

If hospital supplies were used. Then you can count those toward the event correct?__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Any cost incurred by our organization would be valued and reported.

You’re right, Roxanne. I’ve captured the volunteer hours in the occurrence, but haven’t assigned a dollar value to those hours. We are counting the value of the medical supplies we provided (flu vaccine, lab supplies, etc.). __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

We put it in volunteer time and in the notes/memo tell the story of what our employees do for the community when they volunteer. We feel that it is still important to tell what employees do when they volunteer in the community. We have volunteer EMT’s to firemen to employees that start family events in the community that are fueled by their employment here at our hospital that make them want to volunteer. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
